VISUAL JOURNEYS

We train people to tell their own story

Visual Journeys Training

Visual Journeys are all about training group of participants who together will form a filming team, ready to make decisions together in the interest of their community.
It’s about creating a film through the eyes of a selected group of local people helping them transform experiences from thought to visual.
Visual Development’s role is to train, coach and accompany local communities to help them create their own films using their available resources, to reflect the changes they experience in their daily lives.

IT'S NOT JUST A VIDEO

How this experience spreads to others

TO THE PARTICIPANTS:
Telling a story effectively is not an easy task. Participants

will feel empowered. They will be able to reach out and participate as filmmakers in other projects. The knowledge and possibilities at hand when a person learns film-making are endless.
TO THE COMMUNITY:
The community will be able to relive the most important moments of their journey towards achieving an objective. They will analyse and learn from their experience, open debates, lesson learning opportunities and inspire the community to keep going. It is a reason for pride to see oneself portrayed in a film regarding your reality.
TO OTHER COMMUNITIES:
People from other communities, will have a testimony of what happened, difficulties and victories included. This can be an inspiration and a starting point for people who are hoping and dreaming to change their reality in some way.

NO MORE TIME TO WASTE TIME

‘Waste Time’ is the third episode in the ‘As You Open Your Eyes’ series about community change.
Conscious of being surrounded by a polluted ocean and of the absence of a functioning waste management system, the inhabitants of the small Moluccan island of Saparua had no choice but to mobilize their own forces and find local solutions to the global environmental problem that affects their daily lives.
Waste Time shows how a diverse group of people from the teacher, the domina, the shop owner to school children take action together and find creative solutions to reduce, reuse and process waste. They are supported in this by Moluccan lessons of the common law, the adat. After all, “if we don’t do it, who will?” is what the traditional guardian of nature, kewang Uncle Eli, sings to us: ‘Sio sapa lae kalo bukang katong dua’.
